What do managers and staff need for an appraisal or performance review system to work?

1. Staff need to know that the system exists, how it works in general, and how it works for them in particular. The system needs to be clear, easy to understand and straightforward to carry out.

2. New managers should be given short updates and interactive training sessions. They may feel apprehensive about the system and their own responsibilities, if it is a new responsibility for them.

3. Experienced managers may feel jaded about the system or feel that it's too time-consuming. It may be necessary to remind them that effective staff management and development is part of their own job description on which they may be assessed. It's useful to offer support and if need be refresher training on effective ways to carry out appraisals (performance reviews).

Performance reviews/appraisals can be used in two ways:

  • to provide feedback on performance and to make plans for development.
  • to assess whether a person is due for a raise, a promotion or a bonus.

Because of this many companies find it useful to divide these into two separate meetings, each with its own flavour and desired outcome.
