Teaching in the city

The city was exciting, demanding, a new kind of adventure in a different world. Back in her homeland, Susan chose again to do the work that she loved. Her children stayed in their boarding school until the summer holidays. She wrote warm letters to them and felt that she was letting them down.

The weekdays were filled with with the challenge of angry and difficult children, outcasts from school.  She learnt about their lives, their difficulties, the streets where they lived.

Susan watched them with loving attention and saw they how they flourished. She chose lessons and activities to nourish their minds and feed their confidence, feeling as though she was born to teach here. It was delightful to see the light in their eyes when they found themselves understanding something new. She knew that she was doing something valuable.

Then after some time, she began to dislike the noise of the city, the clamorous streets, the hurtling traffic, the busy hectic crowds. She felt trapped in a job that gave her no time to cherish her own children.
