colobus monkeys
The monkeys would swing from branch to branch
then leap in a great arch across the gap to the next tree.
As they swung, they were silhouetted against the valley and mountains beyond.
Early in the morning they would sit gazing outwards, as Susan did.
In that country, colobus were sometimes called the messengers of the gods, because of the way they climbed to the tops of the trees at sunrise and sat silently, as if meditating.
