Living on the mountain
Susan's husband was called Jack. His task was to set up a sawmill and cut and replant the timber in the remote mountain forest.
Their house was near to a small village of forestry workers.
It was because the place was so remote that Susan and Jack had sent their four children to boarding school.
A few other expatriates were there for a short time with their wives. They didn’t like the place, and they were unfriendly to Susan.
Food was scarce in that remote area, so Jack and Susan grew their own as far as they could. The other wives thought the couple were strange because they didn't want imported food, and because they were making a good life there in the forest.
Susan spent her time staring across the valley, writing to her children and feeding the hens. After a while she started to teach some local children to read to pass the time.
The vegetable garden and the hens comforted her...
